Federal Student Aid’s renewed focus on cohort default rates and default prevention is a clear signal: Institutions should understand their borrower risk before official or draft rates arrive, not wait until a rate prompts them to investigate.

A cohort default rate can show what happened, but the headline percentage alone cannot explain why it happened, which borrowers are driving the risk or where intervention may still change the outcome. In this webinar, we’ll move beyond the rate to explore how institutions can analyze borrower-level data, identify meaningful trends and translate those insights into a focused default prevention strategy.

Attendees will learn how to evaluate projected CDR trends, distinguish between borrowers who have already defaulted, those in serious delinquency and those whose repayment challenges are just beginning. We’ll examine how factors such as withdrawal patterns, enrollment reporting, repayment behavior and borrower contactability can reveal where risk is concentrated and help institutions prioritize outreach.

We’ll close with a straightforward framework for communicating CDR risk and action to institutional leadership, along with practical steps institutions can take now to strengthen borrower outreach, improve cross-campus coordination and monitor emerging risk in future cohorts.
